Soil-first landscape care · Kauai

Healthy landscapes start below the surface.

Agricultural microbiologist specializing in the biology, chemistry, and structure of Kauai's soils.

We care for estates, resorts, and shared grounds by finding out why plants thrive or struggle, then fixing the cause.

Biology

The living layer

Fungi, bacteria, and the roots they feed. We rebuild this layer with compost and brewed compost tea, so plants draw on a working soil food web instead of constant inputs.

Chemistry

What plants can actually use

pH and nutrient availability. Kauai's iron-rich red clays hold phosphorus tightly, so more fertilizer is often not the answer. Getting the balance right is.

Structure

How water and air move

Aggregation, compaction, and drainage. A root zone that can breathe and drain decides how everything above it performs, especially through heavy rain.

Every site gets looked at through all three layers.

The approach

Most problems you see in the leaves started in the soil.

Yellowing, dieback, and pest pressure are usually symptoms. We look at what's happening in the root zone before deciding what to plant, prune, or treat.

Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian islands, and its soils are some of the most weathered anywhere. That shapes everything: how nutrients behave, how water drains, and which plants will settle in for the long term. Rainfall alone ranges from the wettest slopes of Waiʻaleʻale to the dry leeward coast, so what works in Hanalei can fail in Waimea.

  • AssessRead the site: soil, drainage, exposure, and what the existing plants are telling us.
  • DiagnoseFind the underlying cause before spending money on symptoms.
  • RebuildCorrect the soil and choose plants suited to it, so results hold.
  1. Site assessmentOne hour on the property: soil, roots, drainage, exposure, and the plants themselves.
  2. Findings and planWhat's causing the problem, in plain terms, and what we recommend.
  3. Correct the causeSoil work, compost tea, pruning, or replanting, depending on what the site needs.
  4. Track the resultsDated photos at each visit, so you can see what changed and when.

About James

Start with a site assessment

A one-hour visit: we walk the property with you, look at the soil, roots, and plants, and explain what's going on. The $100 fee is credited toward the work if you go ahead.
