Soil Health & Plant Performance

Soil assessment and compost tea programs that build fertility in Kauai's soils over time.

Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian islands, and its soils are deeply weathered. Many are iron-rich red clays that hold phosphorus tightly, so nutrients can be present but out of reach of roots. We build soil the way it builds itself: with organic matter and a living microbial community.

What's included

  • Soil assessment: structure, drainage, chemistry, and biology
  • Compost tea brewed and applied on site, to the soil and to the leaves
  • Amendment plans based on what the soil actually lacks
  • Root-zone repair for compacted or damaged areas

What is compost tea?

Compost tea is a liquid brewed from quality compost, water, and food for microbes. Applied to soil, it adds beneficial bacteria and fungi to the root zone. Applied to leaves, it puts beneficial microbes on the leaf surface. Brews can be adjusted for a purpose; adding shrimp meal, for example, favors microbes that produce chitinase.

Questions

Common questions

Why doesn't more fertilizer fix my plants?

In many of Kauai's red clay soils, phosphorus and other nutrients are bound to iron and aluminum and aren't available to roots. Adding more doesn't change that. Correcting pH, building organic matter, and supporting soil biology often make existing nutrients available.

Is compost tea the same as liquid fertilizer?

No. Fertilizer supplies nutrients directly. Compost tea supplies living microbes and their food, which help build a soil that cycles nutrients on its own.
